The
King Dragon Operation, or Naga Min, was a large scale
military operation in
Arakan,
Burma carried out by the then Head of State, General
Ne Win. The operation was claimed to be focused on
mujahideen in the area. However, it affected many innocent Muslims in the area, mainly
Rohingyas. Nowadays, Rohingyas claimed they were deliberately targeted.
The operation began
February 6,
1978 in the village of Sakkipara in
Akyab, where there were mass
arrests and
torture of the
Rohingya people. Over three months, approximately 300,000
Rohingya Muslims fled to neighboring
Bangladesh, where the government offered them shelter in makeshift camps. The
United Nations recognized them as
refugees and began a relief operation.
